The Hill of Spoon River

Instant Theatre Berlin Level 3 Performance Show

Instant Theatre Berlin present an original performance based on characters from the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. Follow our characters as they gather on The Hill where the cemetery is located, and they tell stories from their lives  through a succession of visions and dreams from the afterlife. The  Anthology is a collection of short free verse poems originally published in 1914. The poems collectively narrate the epitaphs* of the residents of Spoon  River, a fictional small town in rural Illinois, U.S.A.

Each  poem  is an autobiographical story of a dead citizen, delivered by the dead  themselves. They speak about their histories and turning points, some make observations about life from the outside, few tell how they really died. There are references to real personalities of the time such as (female) novelist George Eliot and former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.

*An epitaph is the text inscribed on a tombstone or plaque honoring the deceased.
